Because of
their varying geometries and sizes,
different molecules absorb radiation of
different wavelengths. For example, CO2 tends
to absorb radiation of a wavelength
of 15 microns (this wavelength excites
bending vibration of the CO2 molecule), whereas H2O tends to absorb at wavelengths around 12 microns (rotation of the H2O molecule) .
